The painter Eliseu Meifrèn i Roig (Barcelona 24-12-1857) moved with his family to Cadaqués in 1886. In 1911 he was adopted as the village's predilct son due to his friendship with locals.
The following year, he acquired this house. In this image, he is shown painting in its street (c. 1931) accompanied by his second wife, Julia Marina Lamana, and her children (the painter's stepchildren)—Mercedes, Raquel, and José Rancé Lamana. He spent long periods there between numerous trips abroad to attend exhibitions, right up until nearly the year of his death in 1940.

Portlligat circa 1930
Abandoned, the house collapsed and was swallowed up by the forest. It was not until 1998 that these ruins were discovered and the reconstruction process could begin from these two photographs and two other works by the same artist, in order to guarantee its original shape.
